Headquartered in Sydney, Australia, Lucas has a strong presence on both the east and west coasts of Australia. Its Drilling division is based in Brisbane with regional facilities located within the major coal and coal seam gas basins of Queensland and New South Wales. It also has a significant presence in Perth, where the firm is currently involved in two of Australia’s largest infrastructure projects – the Southern Seawater Desalination Plant and the Barrow Island Crossing for the Gorgon project.
It provides drilling services to the coal and coal seam gas industries for the degasification of coal mines and the recovery and commercialisation of coal seam gas. As the largest drilling contractor in Australia, it offers a comprehensive suite of drilling techniques, expertise and equipment.
ENGINEERING AND INFRASTRUCTURE
Lucas engineers and constructs complex civil infrastructure and commercial development projects including desalination plants, power stations, gas and water pipelines and office buildings. The firm is a specialist in the trenchless installation of conduits and pipes using horizontal directional drilling and micro trenching.

The company uses its expertise in unconventional hydrocarbon gas recovery to identify and acquire prospective properties otherwise overlooked by oil and gas companies. These are then drilled to prove the presence of recoverable hydrocarbon reserves and sold on to an energy major.
Lucas, through its wholly owned subsidiary Lucas Cuadrilla Pty Limited, has a 42% equity interest in Cuadrilla, approximately equal with investor funds managed by Riverstone. Cuadrilla is a company incorporated in England and based in Lichfield, Staffordshire. The principal business of Cuadrilla is exploration for unconventional sources of gas and oil in Europe. Cuadrilla holds exploration permits in six different sedimentary basins in the United Kingdom (Bowland and Weald Basins), the Netherlands and Poland, covering in excess of 1 million net acres. In addition, Cuadrilla has exploration license applications pending in Poland and the Czech Republic.
